Madonna at Philips Arena: Better late than never

For more than 30 years, Madonna has been known to change up her style of music, dress, video, and overall creative direction whenever she damn well pleases. But on Jan. 20, during the Philips Arena stop on her Rebel Heart Tour, there was another familiar theme that she's implemented for some time now: A late start.…

The Gizmos and Real Kids to headline the Atlanta Mess-Around

The first wave of bands for the eighth annual Atlanta Mess-Around, April 29-30 at 529 and the Earl, is highlighted by two American punk forerunners. Bloomington, Indiana's the Gizmos pioneered a smirking, brash, and unapologetic sound circa 1976-'77 which still permeates Midwestern punk (see fellow Indiana bands the Coneheads and Lumpy and the Dumpers for irrefutable proof).…

With the Feb. 5 release date for Waking Astronomer's self-titled eight-song EP (Psych Army Intergalactic) just a week away, the group has rolled out one more sneak peek at what's in store. "Rubber" is the third song leaked onto the Internet, following in the footstep of "Br'er Rabbit" and, most recently, "Bottles."

Goldyard goes back to their roots with 'Hmm' video

If you were wondering where Goldyard has been in 2016, look no further than the new visual for their track, "Hmmm." Since dropping last year's Fuck Culture 2, the trio of A.T., In-Doe, and Flick James have been putting the finishing touches on that project's follow-up, Fuck Culture 3. The group tells CL they plan on releasing "a string of work" over the next couple of months, while promoting their most recent release.

"Hmmm (Clap for your Heartbeat)" is vintage Goldyard, featuring MC's In-Doe and A.T. showcasing their lyrical dexterity as they mob through streets and different haunts in ATL. "It's us getting back to the roots of what Goldyard is about," In-Doe says.…

Mutual Jerk shuns comfort zones

Hardcore newcomers validate the punk scene’s clean bill of health. After listing his favorite punk releases of 2015 for CL's music blog, Crib Notes, Wymyns Prysyn singer/bass player and Uniform singer/guitarist Josh Feigert praised Atlanta's hardcore punk scene, calling it a "keen amalgamation of folks from all over the country that have moved here." There's no better evidence supporting Feigert's notion that punks from other cities have injected new blood into Atlanta's thriving scene than Mutual Jerk.…

The political lexicon of 2016 has been highlighted by Ted Cruz's birthers, but flat-earthers may be on the upswing if B.o.B has his say. On Jan. 24, the Atlanta rapper suggested via Twitter that the Earth might, in fact, be flat, much to the dismay of acclaimed astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson.

Julien Baker's cautious optimism

Julien Baker recorded her debut 'Sprained Ankle' at the age of 19, and her sparse guitar work combined with brutally honest lyricism reflects a maturity outpacing her years. Julien Baker didn't think anyone other than a few friends and family members would ever hear the frail songs she wrote in the quiet of her Middle Tennessee State University dorm room. But the songs — obsessed with the visceral consequences of depression and addiction — became the 20-year-old guitarist's debut record that wound up on countless 2015 year-end lists.…

ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons flies solo

ZZ Top guitarist’s solo project adds Latin flavor to his familiar blues-rock palette. Billy Gibbons' six-string blues riffs, gruff voice, and flowing beard have defined the legend of ZZ Top for more than four decades, casting him as a hard rock icon. Gibbons expanded his musical palette last November with the release of Perfectamundo, a solo debut album that blends his familiar Tex-Mex rock 'n' roll with the Afro-Cuban rhythms he studied as a teenager.…

The tactile world of Teebs

Teebs, aka Mtendere Mandowa, has spent a career defining his own influential sound informed by his background as a visual artist. The music of Mtendere Mandowa, better known as Teebs, hinges on the same skittering rhythms threaded throughout Los Angeles' influential beat scene, but the subtle layers in his songwriting give his music a vivid mood. Layers of static and warped textures wrap around Teebs' beats, creating a visceral world in which stray eardrums find plenty of room to roam around.…
