De La Soul on the long road to independence


Since De La Soul released its 1989 debut LP, 3 Feet High and Rising, the trio of Posdnous, Dave, and Maseo have played an integral role in hip-hop’s evolution, bestowing rap music with an idiosyncratic quirkiness the genre hadn't widely embraced before. With albums such as 1991's De La Soul is Dead, 1993’s Buhloone Mindstate, and 1996’s Stakes Is High, the group has maintained a legacy of intelligent and trendsetting hip-hop songcraft — even amid paying a rumored seven figures to settle a lawsuit with the Turtles over an unlicensed sample from the group's debut album.…
