Afropunk finds space in a packed festival scene

Brooklyn-born alt brand isn’t visiting, they’re moving in by Maurice Garland No one has bothered to create an official database to prove it, but it's not a stretch to say that Atlanta has the most festivals in the Southeast, if not the country. We have festivals named after trees, festivals for food trucks, festivals for hip-hop, festivals for country music, festivals for black art, festivals for Jewish films, festivals for ice cream, festivals for beer, and yes, we even have festivals hosted inside cemeteries.…

OutKast's Aquemini turns 17 today

Y'all didn't seriously think we were gonna let the day end without blowing out these candles now did you?

On this date 17 years ago, OutKast released its third album Aquemini and fans the world over have been arguing over which is better — Aquemini or ATLiens — ever since. Not that we have any skin in the game but this lil' oral history on the "Making of Aquemini," published five years ago, makes us a tad partial.…

Watch 10th Letter's 'Song of Asterite'

10th Letter
, aka Jeremi Johnson, describes Portals & Compasses as a sort of "choose your own adventure" novel, creating an "audible voyage that explores the ties between jazz, hip hop, ghetto tech, psych, early electronic music, and the glue that binds them."

That conceptual grandiosity might miss the mark with other like-minded producers, but here, Johnson issues 13 tracks that jump from idea to idea with unencumbered grace and refreshing agility. With support from Atlanta multi-instrumentalist Saira Raza and fellow Harsh Riddims alumni Drew Briggs (aka Divine Interface), Johnson seamlessly cycles through extended, psychedelic segues that sway with the internal bodyclock of IDM, the sedate, futuristic swagger of Flying Lotus, and the alien bombast of Black Dice or Sculpture.

The video for album centerpiece "Song Of The Asterite" (streaming above) perfectly encapsulates the surreal schizophrenic nature of the album, reveling in a postmodern murk of warped charm.…

Tired Magic catalogs heavy shoegaze with 'Seed Library'

Tired Magic, a relative newcomer to Atlanta’s music scene, is a bit of an anomaly. Made up of Joey Collier (guitar, vocals), Steven Smith (guitar, vocals), Jourdan Hardy (bass), and Peyton Knadler (drums), the quartet formed last summer but self-released its debut cassette A Sculpture Inside My Head in April. Now the group is back with its second self-released tape, Seed Library.…

Best of Atlanta block party schedule shuffle

Tonight's CL Best of Atlanta block party is going down rain or shine, but some schedule changes afoot. Most importantly, the Chris Childs Orchestra performance has been moved to the Mammal Gallery, and will fire up at 7 p.m. It's a smaller venue, so it's a good idea to get there a bit early. Performances by Breathers, Flamingo Shadow, and Working Class Music will follow.
