Gláss' Aáron Burke chimes in with his top 5 post-punk albums

The debut LP from Gláss, Accent, is easily one of my favorite post-punk releases of this decade — already up there with greats like Protomartyr's The Agent Intellect, Women's Public Strain, and Savages' Silence Yourself. For all its lyrics about anxiety and unease, Accent is a surprisingly upbeat album.…

Andrew Bird has lost patience with poetics

‘Are You Serious’ finds sincerity in poking fun at love songs. In the song "Left Handed Kisses," from Andrew Bird's latest LP, Are You Serious (Loma Vista Recordings), the words sung back at him in a duet with Fiona Apple come across as downright mean. "The point your song here misses is that if you really loved me, you'd risk more than a few 50 cent words in your backhanded love song," Apple sings.…

MultipleTap brings Japanese noise

Organized by Korean musician Kou Katsuyoshi, MultipleTap’s lineup traces the history of Japanese noise from the genre-defining chaos of Hijokaidan to the operatic experiments of Hatis Noit. In the late '70s Jojo Hiroshige first created noise in a small room with no heat, tucked away in the corner of Nishijin, Japan, an aging textile district where the rent was low and a band of experimental musicians became legends. Known as the Drugstore, the unassuming space hosted early practice sessions for an array of Japanese bands such as Hijokaidan, a flagship noise group co-founded by Hiroshige.…

Pop Weirdos announce new EP 'Any Old Time,' play the Sewing Room

Fresh off the release of their excellent singles "Alcudia" and "Mid Life,"  Pop Weirdos announce the debut of their upcoming EP Any Old Way, due out in May.

Members Jamison Murphy and Bennett Kane normally write with the orchestral playfulness of Brian Wilson, but Any Old Way features the duo exploring Motown influences.

Pop Weirdos follow up the announcement with a performance this Saturday at the Sewing Room, a recent addition to Atlanta's house show circuit. The performance marks the group shifting from its past performances as an acoustic duo to a full band, keeping in line with the rich arrangements featured in its studio recordings.

Pop Weirdos play the Sewing Room with Glass Mansions, Rom, and Exwhy this Saturday, March 26.…

WSB-TV's Mark Arum pays tribute to Phife Dawg

Sad news came yesterday when word spread that Phife Dawg (Malik Taylor) of A Tribe Called Quest had passed away at just 45 years old. Tributes came pouring in via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, et al. But nobody expected Mark Arum of WSB-TV to represent-represent-zent the Five-foot Assassin by lacing his traffic reports with ATCQ lyrics.

Respect.

Jaap Blonk makes strange music with his mouth

What can be said about Jaap Blonk to give the uninitiated some insight into the Dutch sound poet's strange M.O.? Nothing, really ... It has to be seen to be understood. Eefing (sort of), vocal dadaism, and more than a passing obsession with German artist Kurt Schwitters collide in Blonk's ecstatic and anomalous vocal performances.…
